Why advanced ceramics? Abrasion resistance, Thermal barriers & insulators, Strong, hard, durable structural materials, Brittleness (this problem addressed by the development of new materials composites)

Why BC ? Abrasives, Nozzles, Nuclear Applications, Good thermal-neutron capture, Thermal-neutron absorber, Ballistic Armour, Refractory. Low thermal conductivity susceptible to thermal shock failure, Outstanding hardness, Semiconductor, Wear applications (Load compressing or sliding)
